The Kite Flying Contest

The Kite Flying Contest is a story about Kyle the Kangaroo who is a champion kite flyer and his best friend Kookie the Kookaburra who are on the way to The Annual Kite Flying Contest. Kyle is certain to be the winner and bring home the trophy. On their way, they meet a number of people and animals in desperate situations. Kyle is very helpful and generous and doesn’t hesitate to stop along the way and help those he meets out of their predicament. The only thing is something happens as a result of his kindness and giving that keeps him from being able to fly his kite in the Contest. It might not be what you think. Through all the disappointment Kyle learns what is most valuable in life.

No matter how unreal the story may be, as we appeal to the imagination of the child, rules for living can be imparted through imaginary characters in literature — often in a more impactful way than only giving instructions in morals. Here are character qualities you can draw from this story. Kyle, the hero of our story demonstrates all of these:

  • Alertness vs. Unawareness
    • Being aware of that which is taking place around me so I can have the right response to it (Mark 14:38)
  • Attentiveness vs. Unconcern
    • Showing the worth of a person by giving undivided attention to his words and emotions (Hebrews 2:1)
  • Availability vs. Self-centeredness
    • Making my own schedule and priorities secondary to the wishes of those I am serving (Philippians 2:20–21)
  • Compassion vs. Indifference
    • Investing whatever is necessary to heal the hurts of others (I John 3:17)
  • Generosity vs. Stinginess
    • Realizing that all I have belongs to God and using it for His purposes (II Corinthians 9:6)
  • Love vs. Selfishness
    • Giving to others’ basic needs without having as my motive personal reward (I Corinthians 13:3)

Following the Teaching Method of Charlotte Mason

This book is one of our phonics alphabet books from our series, “The Imaginative Child – For the Joy of Learning.” The Kite Flying Contest features the sound of the letter “k”. Our story is filled with many words that begin with the letter “k” – but this is no boring alphabet book.

The Kite Flying Contest is based on the Classical Teaching Method of Charlotte Mason, 19th century British educator and a favorite among Home Schooling parents.

Charlotte Mason believed in immersing children in living books, which say something and impart ideas and real knowledge through story, rather than present a dull recitation of facts or communicate worthless twaddle.

The Kite Flying Contest is followed by notes for parents and teachers. You can feel free to use some or all of the learning activities as it suits you and the age of your child. However, before you share the story with your child, read the story for yourself and look over the learning activities to decide how you would like to use this book.

Helping your Child Develop Creative Learning Skills

This book is a great tool for learning phonics, especially the letter “k.” Besides this, your child will enjoy a unique way of reading comprehension. Immerse your child in the drawing and creative writing exercises inspired by the story. Children who can read well can practice dramatic reading skills as younger children act out the story. Parables and spiritual examples from the Bible are also referenced in the teaching notes as they relate to the characters to make this story a spiritual treat.

Learning exercises can be adapted for ages 3-8 as well as for an audience of one or a group of students.
